{"id":820,"date":"2013-08-21T11:26:54","date_gmt":"2013-08-21T10:26:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.geraldgarcia.com\/Wordpress\/?p=820"},"modified":"2013-08-21T11:26:54","modified_gmt":"2013-08-21T10:26:54","slug":"west-dean-2013-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/geraldgarcia.com\/?p=820","title":{"rendered":"West Dean 2013 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>West Dean &#8211; the name conjures up well appointed gardens, a flint covered manor in the middle of the rolling Sussex countryside, sheep, cream teas, Surrealists, the eccentric Edward James and a lively yet dignified community of craftsmen and women, engaged in furniture making, restoration, stained glass, tapestry, blacksmithing, and crafts we only read about in books.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/user20465.vs.easily.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/P1480967.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-821\" alt=\"W Dean\" src=\"http:\/\/user20465.vs.easily.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/P1480967-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/geraldgarcia.com\/WPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/P1480967-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/geraldgarcia.com\/WPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/P1480967-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/geraldgarcia.com\/WPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/P1480967-400x300.jpg 400w, http:\/\/geraldgarcia.com\/WPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/P1480967.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nSo here we are, a classical guitar course with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xuefeiyang.com\" target=\"_blank\">Xue Fei Yang<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/fabio.zanon.710\" target=\"_blank\">Fabio Zanon<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/johannesmoller.com\" target=\"_blank\">Johannes Moller<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/vidagq.com\" target=\"_blank\">Vida Quartet<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguitaracademy.org.uk\/page8.html\" target=\"_blank\">Arne Brattland<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alisonbendy.com\" target=\"_blank\">Alison Bendy<\/a> and this year&#8217;s new organiser <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classicalguitar.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Gough<\/a> amongst the sheep and chillis.<br \/>\nThe open day \u00a0was a festival in itself, with guitars makers, concerts (including our <a title=\"NYGE 2013\" href=\"http:\/\/geraldgarcia.com.c51.previewmysite.eu\/WPress\/?p=776\" target=\"_blank\">NYGE<\/a> concert and one by Young Musician of the Yeqr finalist Jadran Duncomb) a masterclass by Fei and some nice cups of tea. NYGE&#8217;s performance with Belinda Evans was truyl moving and a fitting tribute to Chris Susans, who bowed out after 12 years as MD, organiser, Head of Pastoral Care, conductor and arranger with a fine performance of Britten&#8217;s Simple Symphony. There is no video of this, but you can watch us at Easter in the <a title=\"More NYGE 2013  Villa Lobos Bachianas Brasileiras No.5\" href=\"http:\/\/geraldgarcia.com.c51.previewmysite.eu\/WPress\/?p=816\" target=\"_blank\">Villa Lobos<\/a> and <a title=\"Hebridean Songs \u2013 more NYGE 2013\" href=\"http:\/\/geraldgarcia.com.c51.previewmysite.eu\/WPress\/?p=800\" target=\"_blank\">Hebridean Songs<\/a>.<br \/>\nI had just arrived hotfoot from the Menuhin Hall (where NYGE had their course) to the interval of Fei&#8217;s concert &#8211; a masterly second half with Bach&#8217;s Chaconne (I have now heard this 6 times this summer), Henze&#8217;s Drei Tentos and a fiery Libra Sonatine by Roland Dyens (which she described as the lighter part of the programme!). Unfortunately I had missed Britten&#8217;s Nocturnal and Fei&#8217;s daring solo arrangement of the Gloriana suite.<br \/>\nAs an encore, she kindly played my arrangement of &#8220;Spring Breeze&#8221; a popular Taiwanese song, which I think was used in a soap opera.<br \/>\nHere is a previous performance she did:<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tx8Bf6VqJIs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Next day&#8217;s concert was by the astonishing Fabio Zanon, both huge in presence and sound, playing another massive guitar work, Ponce&#8217;s Variations and Fugue on Folias, with some characterful and totally engaging Albeniz, Granados and music collected from the Latin American countries Fabio has visited.
